Admittedly, it is now a long time since I watched the video; but I do remember them repeatedly referencing a now debunked study from china, aka "The China Study" that claimed simply eating a plant based diet and limiting animal protein could prevent various illnesses, including cancer.
There is even a book by the same name, which is already suspicious. If there was validity to the claims, it should have gotten more attention in science circles, and there should be no need to write a book about it. This does not appear to have happened.
The claim is, of course both sensational and illogical, so it is amazing this "Planeat" documentary was not outright rejected simply because of that — I guess people really want this stuff to be real — it would be wonderful if things were that simple. Unfortunately, it rarely is.
A science blogger from Science-Based Medicine commented:
The China Study data show the opposite of what Campbell claims: animal protein doesn’t correspond with more disease, even in the highest animal food-eating counties.
